Stephanie Gevrey

STEPHANIE GEVREY

Each of my pieces have, as a starting point, a very rich background, the result of successive layers of a mix of oils and acrylics applied with a knife. This background inspires the rest. Sometimes, I find a face within, sometimes a landscape...and sometimes the background stays muted and I impose upon it a theme.

My technique allows me to play with textures through materials, which is more important to me than the subject of my paintings. The raised pattern of the background, left raw and unfinished, multicolored spots that resemble precious jewels that when worked with water give a finish not unlike leather.

Regardless the chosen subject matter, my quest remains an aesthetic one. I do not intellectualize my work. I love reds and golds for their luxurious sparkle, I love Amber for their richness and softness. A wink of color that rises from the canvas. Never a draft, just a background, materials, my instinct and the sheer joy of painting.
